ODDJOB_C: (CZ07/CZ10 only) – The variable, previously empty, has been filled with information on irregular work last week.
PTIME: The variable has been recoded to take into account the self-reported part-time versus full-time status.
NOTOFF_C, HOURSD/HOURSS, STATUS1, IND1_C/INDD1/INDB1/INDA1, OCC1_C/OCCB1/OCCA1, SUPERV1, PERM1, GROSS1: job characteristics of persons not mainly employed but who worked regularly during the last 7 days (as from the newly added variable ODDJOB_C) have been added.

FLOW VARIABLES
PMILS/PMICROY: (excl. CZ04) – Royalties, previously reported together with self-employment income in PMILS, have been separated and put in PMICROY.
PMITSILEP/HMITSUFA: Death grant, previously reported with the birth grant in HFITSUFA, has been separated and put into PMITSILEP.
HMITSUFACC: Parental allowance, previously reported in PMITSIS, has been moved to PMITSUFACC.

IMMIGR: This derived variable changed due to the revision in CITIZEN; some more persons are now classified as immigrants.
ENRLEV_C: (applies only to DE10) – An error has been corrected and a few missing observations were recovered and added to category 12 (University (Universität), Other College); German labels for the educational path have been added.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
The block of labour market variables has been revised for consistency with DE13. Besides the below mentioned changes, also other individual job characteristics slightly changed to an extended group of employed persons in CLFS.
CLFS: Various persons on maternity/parental, or care leave have been added to category 120 (employed, not at work).
JSEARCH/LEAVE: The previous contents were reviewed and replaced by similar harmonisation decisions as in DE13.
NJOBS/SECJOB: An error has been corrected, and thus more persons hold secondary jobs.
INDC1/INDB1: Category indistinguishable (code 90) has been added, in order to distinguish missing information from inseparable information for a few persons.
HOURS1: This information has been replaced by using usual working hours (including usual overtime) as in the whole German series from SOEP.
GROSS1/NET1: These contents changed, as monthly wages are now divided by the usual working hours; various missing observations were replaced by using also simulated amounts for gross/net monthly wages.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMICREN: An error has been corrected, this concerns only a few households; this correction has a negligible inequality reducing effect on the LIS Key Figures.
PMITSIL: (applies only to DE10) – An error has been corrected, this concerns only a few households; this correction has a negligible effect on the LIS Key Figures.
HMITSUFAAM: (applies only to DE10) – An error has been corrected; advance maintenance transfers were left out and now added. This correction has a negligible inequality reducing effect on most LIS Key Figures; children poverty rates (40/50/60) were approximately reduced by one percentage point.
PMIATSUR/HMIATSUR: (applies only to DE07) – These variables are now additionally available.
HMIATUNE: (applies only to DE07) – An error has been corrected; previously household level unemployment benefits were not included.
PMWLE/PMWTRC: The previous contents of variable retirement compensation (variable PMWTRC) were moved to windfall employee income (variable PMWLE); these concerned income (Abfindung) needs to be rather classified as one time severance pay.
HMCHOUS: Now includes also utilities cost for owners; for DE10 only, it also includes electricity cost for tenants.
PENSION/PPENSION: Now includes also pensions from war victims’ provision as in the whole German series from SOEP.

FLOW VARIABLES
The additional sets of transfers (previously moslty empty) were filled as much as possible both at the individual and the household level. Please note though that due to changes in German legislation these transfers could not be filled consistently. Please consult the variable specific documentation and benefits documentation in METIS for exact contents.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
RURAL/AREA_C: An error has been corrected; erroneously the codes had been reversed, so that urban areas were coded as rural and vice versa.
OWN: Contents have been revised to reflect ownership rates at household level, this if any person in the household shows ownership of main dwelling then this household is considered as owner.Unfortunately for NO07 category 100 (owned) includes also owndership of secondary homes.
DWELVAL: (applies only to NO10) – LIS received additional information, so that this variable is now also available.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
ENROLL (applies to NO10) – LIS received additional information, so that this variable is now also available.

FLOW VARIABLES
PMICVIP / HMICVIP (applies only to NO10) – These variables are no longer provided, as it has been clarified that the previous contents did not refer to individual pensions, but rather to deductions of taxable income. This correction has a negligible impact on the more aggregated income variables, DHI, PPENSION, PENSION and the LIS Key Figures.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
MILIT: An error has been corrected, so that some persons who were previously wronngly included in category 1 (in military/conscript service) have been moved to category 0 (not in military/conscript service).
WEEKS: The variable has been topcoded at 52.

HMITSUFACA/HMITSUFACC: Some contents previously included in HMITSUFACC have been moved to HMITSUFACA.

The non-monetary consumption variables have been revised for consistency with SI12, including now also in kind benefits from the employers, friends or relatives. This correction slightly affects all aggregated variables from monetary + non-monetary consumption.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMXIT/HXIT: This variable is no longer filled; the previous contents only included social security contributions, but no taxes.
DPI/DHI: A mistake was corrected, which implied that social security contributions (HMXITSS/HXITSS) were wrongly deducted from total (net) income (HMI/HI) to create disposable household income (DPI/DHI). As a result, total disposable income (DHI/DPI) is now identical to total (net) income (HI/HMI). Note that this correction slightly affects the LIS Key Figures.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
REGION_C: The variable, previously empty, is now filled with local administrative units (cantons).
FARM: The variable, previously empty, is now filled with information on whether the household lives in a farm (from the type of dwelling), regardless if the household performs farming activities or not.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
EDUC: Code 9 “indistinguishable” was recoded in code 1 “low” (as it includes only complementary education in the old schooling system, which is equivalent with lower secondary).
EDUC_C (LU10): Code 50 “post-secondary: BAC+2” was recoded to code 41 with same content, and consequently, codes 51 to 53 were recoded to one digit less from 50 to 52.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
WEEKSUE: The variable, previously empty, is now filled.
EMPWANT: The variable, previously empty, is now filled.
SECTOR1: Code 223 “other entity with public participation” is now filled with employees at EU institutions, NSPA, and all other persons who depend of another fiscal administration than the Luxembourgish one.

FLOW VARIABLES
PMILERB: The income from second job was removed from here and mapped directly at the upper level of PMILER because it includes also supplements.
HNILERS: The value of the imputed rent of accommodation provided by the employer was added.
HMICRENR: Variable no longer provided; the content is to be found at the level of HMICREN because it includes all income from rental.
PMITSILO/PMITSILEPO/PMITSILEPD/PMITSILEPS: The pension supplements were removed from PMITSILEPO/PMIATOLD for those who did not receive an old-age pension and mapped in the type of pension they received (PMITSILO/PMITSILEPD/PMITSILEPS).
PMITSILO/PMITSISUN: Early retirement scheme from employer was removed from PMITSISUN/PMIATUNE and recoded in PMITSILO/PMIATOLD.
PMITSISSI: The variable, previously empty, is now provided. The amount is also provided in PMIATSIC.
HMITSU: (applied to LU10) Imputed rent for subsidized tenants was removed from here and put in HNCHOUSI (if not already included).
PMITSUPD: Variable no longer provided. The few cases of veterans pensions that were mapped there are to be found in PMITSUP.
HMITSUFA/PMITSAPO: The Education payment, previously in PMITSAPO, has been recoded in HMITSUFA/PMIATFAM (leaving variable PMISTAPO empty).
HMITSUFACA/HMITSUFACC: Maternity allowance was recoded from HMITSUFACA to HMITSUFACC.
PMITSAGEN: The variable was reviewed and it now contains only the Minimum Income Guaranteed (Revenu Minimum Garanti) and Public Social Aid (Aide social publique); other social benefits from Solidarity Fund that were previously included are to be found only at upper level PMITSA.
PMITSAFA/PMITPIHA: Private alimony, previously erroneously mapped in PMITSAFA and PMIATFAM, has been recoded in PMITPIHA.
PMITSAHO: Variable not provided anymore at personal level; the content is to be found in HMITSAHO (which has now been corrected for erroneous multiple amount in case of several household members).

HMWTIN: The variable, previously empty, is now filled.
HWTIN: Donations that was previously mapped here was recoded at the upper level in HMWT; now the variable contains only inheritances.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
OWN: Category owned (100) has been further distinguished in the subcategories (110=owned outright / 120=owned with mortgage).

FLOW VARIABLES
HMTOLM: This now excludes interest payments for mortgages which are now reported separately in HMXINTM as in LU07/10/13. Note in earlier datasets of the series HMTOLM includes interest payments for mortgages.
HMXINTM: This variable is now filled; interest payments for mortgages were previously included in HMTOLM together with mortgage repayments.
HMCHOUS/HMCHOUSA: The previous contents of HMCHOUS were reallocated to HMCHOUSA, as the contents referred only to actual rent without charges. Unfortunately the charges were not collected in LU04, hence the variable HMCHOUS is not provided in LU04.
HNCHOUSI: The contents have been modified, values are now based on the self-estimated value of the rent that the household would have to pay for renting at the market price their dwelling excluding charges. In case of owners refers to unfurnished dwelling, in case of tenants in similar condition they are renting/received for free use. In case of the tenants renting under the market price it refers only to the difference between the estimated rent at market price and the rent they actually paid.
HNCBOWNIR: The contents have been modified, values are now based on the self-estimated value of the hypothetical rent that the household would have to pay for renting at the market price their unfurnished dwelling, excluding charges.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
OWN: (applies to LU94/LU91) This variable is now also available.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMTOLM: (applies to LU97/LU94/LU91) This variable is now available; however, interest payments for mortgages are reported together with mortgage repayments as it is also in LU00. Note in later datasets of the series (LU04/LU07/LU10/LU13) interest payments for mortgages were separated out in variable HMXINTM, so that HMTOLM only includes opnly mortgage repayments.
HMCHOUS/HMCHOUSA: The previous contents of HMCHOUS were partly reallocated to HMCHOUSA, splitting actual rent (HMCHOUSA) from utilities (directly added in variable HMCHOUS).
HMCFOOD/HMCTRAN/HMCRESTO/HMCMISC: As in later years household costs have been allocated to those variables; respective notes in the codebook cladify the non-standard contents of these variables.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
NEARN: This variable was slightly changed due to a correction in PMILER; now a few more observations show positive earnings.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
SECTOR1/2: (applies to UK10) These variables are now also filled.
SUPERV1: This variable is now also filled.
TENYR1/TEN5YR1: These variables have been reviewed to be more accurate also using the month when started the current job.

FLOW VARIABLES
While harmonising the most recent wave of the British data (UK13), LIS adjusted the annualisation of various variables in UK07/10. Note all weeklylised amounts by the data provider were now consistently multiplied by 52. These adjustments affected hardly the LIS Key Figures, but some amounts in individual income sources substantially changed, paritcularly capital incomes and income taxes were adjusted.
Besides adjustment of annualisation, also a few zero incomes in wages (included in PMILER) were replaced with positive amounts, as well as the taxation of bonuses (included in PMXITI) was added.
Among the social security benefits, a couple of minor benefits were reassigned to differnt variables in line with UK13; these changes hardly affected the overall split in insurance, universal, and assistance transfers.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
OWN: The contents have been further reclassified from more aggregated categories (200,210) to the more detailed categories (211,212) in line with UK07/10/13.

FLOW VARIABLES
For the datasets UK04,UK99,UK95,UK94 the additional set of transfers is now filled.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
RURAL: The urban/rural distinction based on the 2001 Census classification was used (instead of the one collected in the interview).
OWN: The variable (previously empty) has been filled.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
MIGRAT_C: The variable now contains information on the family’s place of origin (previsouly reported in IMMIGR_C) rather than the number of years since it moved (no longer reported).
IMMIGR_C: The variable now contains information on the mother tongue rather than on the family’s place of origin (now reported in MIGRAT_C).
ILLNESS_C: The codes (and to a much lesser extent the contents as well) have been reworked to be consisten with later datasets.
EDMOM_C: This variable was emptied as it was filled for a very small subset of the sample (only for the persons living with their monthers).
EDDAD_C: This universe of this variable is now limited to the heads of households.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
The labour market variables have been substantially revised. The two major changes concern the restriction in the criteria for considering individuals as employed in the EMP variable (and hence the universe and contents of all variables defined for employed persons), and the blanking of all variables previously containing information about second job. More specifically:
EMP: The variable, previously containing an indication of any employment during the year, is now derived solely from usual activity status in the income reference period (see note for UMAS for more details). In addition, the universe is now limited to persons aged 5 or above. As a result of both changes, the universe of all the employment intensity and job characteristics variables has been substantially reduced.
MAINEMP/UMAS: A large number of persons previously considered as mainly employed were recoded as not mainly employed; this concerns 11,720 individuals who only took care of animals (as there is no information on the number of hours worked, see HPROD_C), as well as 584 individuals that worked less than 150 days in the previous year (even if they worked more than 1200 hours). In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons aged 5 or above.
HPROD_C: All categories were recoded to 1 digit (in line with IN11) and the content was slightly reviewed. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons aged 5 or above.
ODDJOB_C: The variable, previously containing an indication of casual work in main dependent job (information still included in variable PERM1), now contains information on different Government public employment programmes to which the person took part in the previous year. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons aged 5 or above.
FTFY: The variable (previously empty) is now provided (see note to the variable for more details).
HOURS: The variable has been emptied as it is not possible between hours carried out in simultaneous versus consecutive jobs and because the number of hours of secondary dependent jobs are not available.
HOURSD: The variable, previously empty, is now filled with the weekly hours worked in the main dependent job in the previous year (see note to the variable for more details).
HOURSS: The variable, previously empty, is now filled with the weekly hours worked in self-employment or family business in the previous year, including farm business and up to three non-farm businesses (see note for more details).
WEEKS/WEEKSFT/WEEKSPT: The content was reviewed: if previously, in case of several jobs, the variable contained the number of weeks worked in the longest (part-time/full-time) job; now the days worked in all (part-time/full-time) self-employment activities and main dependent job held last year are added up and top coded at 52 weeks. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons aged 5 or above.
SECJOB/NJOBS/STATUS2/IND2_C/INDC2/INDB2/INDA2/OCC2_C/OCCB2/OCCA2/PERM2/PTIME2/HOURS2/NET2: These variables are no longer provided since there is no information if the jobs were simultaneous or consecutive and there is no information about other dependent jobs than the main one held in the past year.
STATUS1: The variable was substantially reviewed. The major changes concern the distinction between regular employees and temporary or occasional workers (previously based on whether they were paid salaries or wages, and now based on self-assessed permanent versus casual worker status), the distinction between employers versus own-account workers (a minimum threshold of INR 100 paid per year for hired labour was set in order to be considered an employer) and a correction for contributing family workers (a large number of them had previously wronlgy been coded as own-account workers). In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
INDC1/INDB1/INDA1: The recoding of IND1_C into INDC1 was reviewed: code 64 “commission agents” of IND1_C, that was previously coded in code 7 “G-wholesale and retail trade; repair” of INDC1 is now coded in code 10 “J-financial intermediation”. Code 16 “P-activities of private households; household services” is not provided anymore since it was incomplete and most of the group is mixed across categories (see note for more details). These revisions had a subsequent impact on INDB1 and INDA1 as well which are recodes of INDC1 in this case. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
SECTOR1: The universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
OCC1_C: The variable was reviewed: the farmers and the family workers helping in farming business are coded now in code 61 “cultivators” (previously were wrongly in coded in 63 “agricultural labourers”). This revision had a subsequent impact on occb1 as well. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
OCCB1/OCCA1: The recoding of OCC1_C into OCCB1 was reviewed following ISCO 88 classification: codes 30 “clerical and other supervisors” and 36 “transport and communication supervisors” of occ1_c were recoded to code 4 “clerical support workers” (previously in code 1 “managers”). These revisions had a subsequent impact on OCCA1 which is a recode of OCCB1 in this case: now the 2 categories are coded in code 2 “other skilled workers (ISCO 3-8, 10)” (previously were in code 1 “managers and professionals (ISCO 1 & 2)” of occa1). Code 15 “teachers” of occ1_c was recoded to code 3 “technicians and associate professionals” (previously in code 2 “professionals”). Codes 41 ”manufacturer agents” and 42 “technical salesmen and commercial travellers” of occ1_c were recoded to code 5 “service and sales workers” (previously in code 3 “technicians and associate professionals”). Code 33 “book-keepers, cashiers and related workers” of occ1_c was recoded from code 90 ”indistinguishable” to code 4 “clerical support workers”.
PERM1: The universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
PTIME1/HOURS1: The content was reviewed, being calculated from the daily hours assuming 6 working days per week. In addition, the universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.
NET1: The universe has been reduced to persons considered as employed in the EMP variable.

FLOW VARIABLES
Some adjustements were made – especially to labour incomes and more in general to in-kind incomes, with a notable impact on overall DHI and especially DPI (which was previously largely underestimated).
Consumption variables were also substantially modified because of a rather large mistake for food consumption, for which the amounts were previously monthly instead of annual. More specifically:
HMI: Some amounts which were previously directly added at this level were moved to HMWC (because they mostly represented windfall income). This has a slight impact on DHI and DPI.br />
PMILERB/PNILERB: Now include basic wages / in-kind earnings for all dependent employees (whereas they used to include basic wages / in-kind earnings for salaried workers only).
PMILERS: Now includes supplements for all dependent employees (whereas it used to include supplements for salaried workers only).
PMILEC/PNILEC: No longer provided (the incomes of the wage workers have been moved to regualar dependent employment income (variables PMILERB, PNILERB and PMILERS) together with the incomes of salaried workers).
HMILSF: The variable, previously empty, now includes the income from production from crops and animals (previously at the upper level in HILSF). This has a rather large impact on total monetary disposable income (DPI), which was previously underestimated.
HNILSF: A mistake was corrected (the amounts were monthly instead of annual). This has an impact on DHI.
HMILSNB: The variable, previously empty, now includes the business income (previously at the upper level in HILSNB). This has a rather large impact on total monetary disposable income (DPI), which was previously underestimated.
PMITSAUN: The variable, previously empty, has been filled with the benefits from the Income Generation Programmes (previously at the upper level in P/HMITSA).
HNITSAHE/HNITSAFO: A mistake was corrected (the amounts were monthly instead of annual). This has a slight impact on overall DHI.
HMWC: The variable (previously empty) has been filled with amounts relating mostly to windfall income (previously included in HMI).
HC/HNC: The variables have been blanked as the amounts were not complete (imputed rent is not avaialble for this dataset).
HMCFOOD/HNCFOOD: A mistake was corrected (the amounts were monthly instead of annual).
HMCHOUS/HMCMISC: Consumer taxes and water charges were moved from HMCMISC to HMCHOUS.
HMCHOUSA: Monetary housing expenditures in case of owned dwelling were moved from HMHOUSA to HMCHOUS (assuming these were charges and utilities).
HMCEQUIP/HMCMISC: Expenditures on household items and repair and maintenance were moved from HMCMISC to HMCEQUIP.
HNCBOWNG: A mistake was corrected (the amounts were monthly instead of annual).
HNCBGIFTG: The variable, previously empty, has been filled with the amount of non-cash food benefits.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
OWN: More detail is now available: code 100 (owned) is further split between codes 110 (owned outright) and 120 (owned with mortgage); additionally, code 220 (free housing) is now provided.
FARMING: (only in TW07) – The variable was reviewed recoding to 100 (farming) those households in which there is at least one household member self-employed in agriculture.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
RELATION: An error was corrected; children in law and grandchildren in law (previously wrongly coded as “nephew/niece” in code 4160) were recoded to codes 4140 and 4100 respectively.
PARENTS: This variable was reviewed to include the parents of the head as well.
PARTNER: This variable has been further refined, all cases previously coded in 100 (has partner) were further distinguished between 110 (living with partner) and 120 (not living with partner) based on the existence of the partner in the household.
MIGRAT_C: This variable (previously empty) is now filled with the “localisation of the working place”.
EDUC_C: This variable was recoded with additional input; as a consequence, some individuals change category (currently enrolled and, for TW07 drop-outs of a certain level as well, were recoded a level below); additionally, “no education” was separated from “some primary, not completed”, consequently all the subsequence codes changed (adding 1 to the previous code).
EDUC: Individuals who completed “junior college” (previously in code 2 – medium) were recoded to code 3 (high); note that the recoding of EDUC_C impacted the EDUC as well when the individuals were recoded from a higher to a lower category based on the fact that they did not graduated.
ENROLL: Code 200 (currently not enrolled) has been further split between code 210 (not enrolled, attended in the past) and code 220 (not enrolled, never attended).
ENRLEV_C: This variable is now provided.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
CLFS: This variable (previously empty) is now provided; consequently, EMP and UNEMP are now based on CLFS; note that occasional workers and part-time employees that earn under a certain level (different by year) are now included as well.
NOTOFF_C: This variable (previously empty) is now provided, flagging persons that are working and are not insured under the social security scheme.
SECTOR1: (only in TW10) – This variable (previously empty) is now provided.
PTIME1: This variable is no longer provided as the information was referring to the part time status taking into account all jobs (this information is already included in PTIME).

CLFS: This variable (previously empty) is now provided; consequently, EMP and UNEMP are now based on CLFS; note that occasional workers and part-time employees that earn under a certain level (different by year) are now included as well.

EDUC_C/ENRLEV_C: Some labels were edited to be in line with ES13.
EDUC: Some persons previously coded in code 2 (medium) were recoded into 3 (high); this corresponds to the cases coded 50 to 53 in EDUC_C.

FLOW VARIABLES
PNILSF (only for ES07) & HNILSF: These variables are no longer provided; the respective amounts are included directly at the upper level in PNILS/ HNILS since they include also non-farm goods produced for own consumption.
HMITPIHFT: This variable is no longer provided; the amount is included directly at the upper level in HMITPIH since it includes also remittances received.
HMXITIA: This variable is now filled with the tax adjustments corresponding to the year preceding the income reference year; note that the tax adjustments were already included at the upper level in HMXIT.
HMXIT: (only for ES10) – An error was corrected (for the persons that received a private pension, the taxes on this source of income were previously counted twice).
HMXOTP: (only for ES07) – This variable is now filled with the wealth tax; note that between 2008 and 2010 the wealth tax was temporarily suspended in Spain (for this reason this variable is not filled for ES10).

All monetary/non-monetary values of the Mexican datasets MX89 and MX92, previously expressed in new pesos, have been converted to old pesos.

In fact the new peso was only introduced in 1993, and hence all datasets prior to that date (including MX84, and now also MX89 and MX92) are now expressed in the local curreny in force at the moment of the survey, which was the old peso.

The Mexican datasets MX92,MX89,MX84 can be transformed to the new peso by an adjustment factor (1/1000).

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
INDC1/INDB1/INDA1: Various missing values were recovered; all observations from IND1_C are now transformed to the LIS standardised industry variables.

The whole database was rerun to incorporate template adjustments to a number of labour market variables. More specifically:
– The codes and value labels of variables SECTOR1/2 have been revised; the whole LIS Database has been recoded accordingly.
– The codes and value labels of variable EMPWANT have been revised; the whole LIS Database has been recoded accordingly.
– LIS variable CLFS was reviewed for the whole LIS database, incorporating the removal of category ‘inactive unemployed’ (code 213), which was recoded to either 210/211/212 (if they were actively looking and fulfilled the respective conditions) or in the 220s (if they were not actively looking – and hence not in the labour force). As a result, category ‘unemployed’ (codes 210s) should capture only persons actively looking for work, further distinguishing in ‘ILO unemployed’ (code 211) and ‘other unemployed’ (code 212). However, in some datasets category ‘unemployed’ (code 210) could refer to self-assessed activity status; in these datasets a note to the users will clarify the content. Please note that due to this change, the UNEMP dummy has changed accordingly.
– Two new industry variables have been introduced; INDD1/2 reflect the 21 standard categories of ISIC Rev.4 / NACE Rev. 2; if available in the original data, LIS will provide this information from LIS Wave VIII onwards, and recode INDB1/2 and INDA1/2 from this classification. Earlier LIS datasets (Wave 0 to VII) are coded to the 17 standard categories of ISIC Rev.3.1 / NACE Rev. 1.1 classification, which is reported in INDC1/2.
– The variable PEXP has been definitively removed from the LIS Database.
Please see the LIS Variable List and the Variable Definition List for details about the new standard labels and codes.

At the same time, some data cleaning has been carried out, including:
LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES:
– While reviewing the variables CLFS and EMPWANT, recoding adjustments have been carried out to variables CMAS, UMAS, MILIT in some datasets. Altogether, this has led to changes to variable EMP and hence the universe of all job characteristics variables for a few datasets.
– Variable MAINEMP was revised to ensure its consistency with the definition in some older datasets (AT00, AT04, GR00, IE00): it is now based on UMAS for all datasets for which UMAS is available.
FLOW VARIABLES (consumption variables):
– LIS corrected some errors in the datasets released before 2011 (those transformed from the old into the new LIS Data Template): i) variable HMC is now provided only when all 12 major COICOP groups of monetary consumption are available; and, ii) variable HMCHOUS has been corrected because it included imputed rent (which was also included in HNCHOUSI), leading to a double count of imputed rent in HCHOUS.
– Additionally some country-specific errors were corrected: two old German datasets (DE73 and DE78) were substantially revised because of a mistake in the annualisation of the amounts of all the consumption variables; variable HNCHOUSI was corrected in IL05 and LU04 (amounts are now annualised; before imputed rent referred to monthly amounts).

The datasets were rerun based on the revised version of the original data as provided by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), including a revised weight based on the 2011 Census data, newly performed imputations of several income data, as well as generally improved data cleaning procedures. As a result, most LIS variables are affected to some extent.
In addition, we explicitely changed the treament of the following variables.

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES
REGION_C: This variable has been modified to incorporate the same information as in ZA12; it contains now a two digit coding for the boundaries of the 2001 and 2011 Census; the first digit refers to the 2001 boundaries, the second digit to the 2011 boundaries.
AREA_C: This variable has been modified to incorporate the same information as in ZA12; it contains now a two digit coding for geographical area type on the classifications of 2001 and 2011.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
DISABLED: This variable has been created as in ZA12; note it refers to persons who have been diagnosed and still have a major illness or disability, which in South Africa frequently makes them eligible for disability benefits.
EDUC_C: Code 0 has been standardised to signify “still in education” in the LIS database, followed by no education in the first category; all other categories with any educational qualification were coded with +2, now in line with ZA12.
EDMOM_C/EDDAD_C: Code 0 has been standardised to signify “still in education” in the LIS database, followed by no education in the first category; all other categories with any educational qualification were coded with +2, now in line with ZA12.
ENRLEV_C: Code 0 is not foreseen in this variable in the LIS database, all educational levels were now coded starting from code 1 as in ZA12.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
CLFS: The preparation of the categories has been slightly adjusted in line with the preparation as in ZA12.
EMPWANT: Further detail was provided; for not-employed persons it could be distinguished if a person was looking for work (category unemployed), or wants to work and was available to start, but was not looking for work (category discouraged workers), or wants to work, but was not able to start and not looking for work (category inactive, would like work).
UNDUR: (applies to ZA10) This variable is now provided.
EVERWORK: (applies to ZA10) This variable is no longer provided, as it did not provide appropriate contents and a fair amount of missings.

FLOW VARIABLES
DHI: Missing information and 0 values were replaced by a direct question on total household income.
PMIATOLD: This variable is now provided.
PMIATDIS: This variable is now provided.
PMIATFAM: This variable is now provided.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMIC: The variable is created as the difference between the amount of “other incomes” as reported by the respondent and the amount of the simulated social security benefits (presumably included in the total reported amount). The way this differential amount is calculated has been modified in line with BR06 and BR13. This change affects slightly all more aggregated income variables HMI,HI,DPI,DHI,FACTOR and the LIS Key Figures.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
CLFS: Persons wishing to find a job but not looking for one, previously coded as inactive unemployed (code 213) were re-allocated to the inactive categories (220s); a few cases were re-allocated to active unemployed (code 212). Code 200 was re-allocated to 220.
UNEMP: This variable changed due to the modifications in CLFS.
UNDUR: (applies to RU07/RU10)The information was extended to proxy the duration of the current unemployment spell by the question on how long a person has been looking for a job; previously it included only observations of days registered with the unemployment office.
JSEARCH: The input variable for this variable changed; it now includes information on whether someone actively looked for a job (previously it included all cases that wanted to find work).
EMPWANT: This variable is now filled.
OURSS/HOURSD: These variables are now filled.
OCCB1/OCCA1: (applies to RU10) These variables are now filled.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMILSF: This variable has been replaced by a set of derived variables from the data provider that were calculated from quantities sold from agriculture and husbandry in the last 12 months: this change affects all more aggregated income variables HMILS,HMIL,HMI,HILS,HIL,HI,DPI,DHI and the LIS Key Figures.
HNILSF: This variable is now filled; it contains the value of goods from agricultural home production that were consumed or given away to others: this change affects all more aggregated income variables HNILS,HNIL,HNI,HILS,HIL,HI,DHI and the LIS Key Figures.
HMC: This variable is now available.

FLOW VARIABLES
The data provider released a new version of the original data (the 2014 ASEC data files were corrected to accommodate an additional tax bracket into the 2014 tax model). This impacted the tax data (and hence the disposable household income) of households at the very top of the income distribution (about 0.5% of the households in the sample).
PMXITI/PMXIT/HMXITI/HMXIT: Income taxes for the 0.5% households at the top of the distribution – previously erroneously left at zero because of an error in the last tax bracket for the 2014 tax simulation model of the Census Bureau – now contain correct amounts.
DHI: The disposable income for the households at the top of the income distribution has now been revised downwards (see comment above).

Please note that this dataset does not cover the total population; the Encuesta Continua de Hogares 2004 (ECH 2004) only covered the whole department of Montevideo and the localities of 5000 or more inhabitants in the other departments (around 80 % of the total population).
Thus please use this dataset with care.

TECHNICAL VARIABLES
PPOPWGT/HPOPWGT: The weight variables have been re-adjusted to inflate to the covered population (department of Montevideo and the localities of 5000 or more inhabitants in the other departments) – approximately 80 % of the total population. Before the weights inflated to the total population.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
MAINEMP: This variable is now derived from the current labour force status (CLFS).
UNEMP: This variable contains now more valid cases of unemployed and not unemployed persons due to the changes to the variable CLFS.
RETIRED: This variable is now derived from the current labour force status (CLFS).
CLFS: Code 200 was further specified to the sub-categories..
CMAS: This variable is no longer filled, as it contained many missing observations for whom no main activity status could be derived.
JSEARCH: This varibale had been coded incomplete; now it is filled for the whole sample for which information was available.
EMPWANT: This variable is now provided.
SECTOR1: A few more missings were recovered for the self-emplyed persons, who are now added to category 1300 (individual/family enterprise,household or self-employed).

FLOW VARIABLES
HITS: This variable now includes also monetary and non-monetary grants, subsidies and donations, which erroneously were left out before. Note this change also affects the major aggregates DHI and SOCRED, and the LIS key figures.
HMITSUFACA: This variable is no longer filled; the previous contents were moved to HMITSAFA.
HMITSAFA: This variable now includes the income-tested family benefits, which previously were included in HMITSUFACA.

Prompted by the receipt of a new weight variable, the dataset has been completely re-harmonised in the new template, giving rise mainly to the addition
of detail to many variables. Also, the dataset, previously treated as a net dataset, is now considered gross. Wages are reported gross and related
social contributions and taxes are available; non-farming self-employment earnings are gross and taxes are available while farming and other income
(capital incomes and transfers) are net. The different harmonisation of self-employment incomes slightly decreased the inequality of the LIS key-figures measures.

TECHNICAL VARIABLES
HWGT/HPOPWGT/PPOPWGT/PWGT: New weights were provided by the data provider, which are recalibrated to the latest population projections based
on the 2007 Census. This has mostly affected the urban and rural population structures in the country.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES
The whole labour market module was revised in line with the newer Peruvian data sets PE07/10/13. As a result the contents of various variables slightly changed.
The following variables are now additionally available:

FLOW VARIABLES
Since the revised Peruvian data from 2004 were harmonised with the current template, individual level incomes contain now more detail than before. As compared to the previous version of 2004, a few modifications were carried out:
– Paid employment income (PMILE) now reports amounts gross of income taxes and social security contributions; before it contained net amounts.
– Paid employment income (PMILE) is now split in casual (PMILEC) and regular (PMILER) income.
– Various sources of self employment income were calculated using the specific information from the self-employment questionnaires. Self-employment income therefore now includes losses.
– In order to calculate the net profit of the business costs could not be allocated to the monetary and non-monetary component. Therefore HMILS and HNILS are not provided separately; therefore also the income levels HMIL,HNIL,HMI,HNI, and DPI, are no longer provided, as they would not contain self-employment income.
– Rental income (HMICREN) is now split into its three sources (HMICRENR/L/M).
– Employment-related public pensions (PMITSILEP) are now reported separately in old-age insurance public pensions (PMITSILEPO) and survivors insurance public pensions (PMITSILEPS). Please note that PMITSILEPO includes also the minor part from disability pensions.
– Several non-monetary social assistance transfers have been added.
PMXITI/PMXITS: Personal level taxes and social contributions are now available.
HMCHOUSA/HNCBGIFTG/HCBGIFTO/HNCBOWNG: Now available.

LABOUR MARKET VARIABLES

An error in the consumption section was corrected that was setting all values for households with children to missing.
Note that there is very little consumption information available in these datasets. HMCMED contains all health-related expenditures (including private health insurance premiums), and HMCMISC includes only with child-care. A note has been added to clarify the deviation from the ideal contents.

Thanks to the receipt of a number of more detailed original variables, the dataset has been substantially revised. The revision consisted mainly in adding detail to many variables.
The revision has had a minor impact also on the final DHI measure (as we were better able to separate windfall incomes from current incomes) and hence on the Key Figures, but the magnitude of the change is very small.

EDUC: Various vocational education degrees were previously set to missing, they are now inluded in medium level education. Also a few more cases of low education were recovered..

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES
DISABLED: This variable is now filled.
DISABL_C: The variable, previously without labels, has been recoded into the same 5 categories in sequential order starting with value 1.
EDUC: his variable contains now also code 9 (indistinguishable), which includes ‘industrial/trade school’ from EDUC_C; these programs contain a mixture of ISCED 2C and 3C programmes and therefore were not allocated to low or medium education; previously those observations were set to missing.
EDUC_C: Numbering was modified in line with the Hungarian data series.
ENROLL: Some missings were restored to be included in 100 (currently enrolled).
ENRLEV_C: Contents were revised for better consistency with the newer Hungarian data sets; values and order were changed and labels were clarified.

FLOW VARIABLES
HMICVIP: This level of detail is no longer provided, as it was filled with content that was not clearly separable in the original data, these contents are now directly added to HMIC.
HMITSISMA: Some of the previous contents were reassigned to HMITSUFACA or HMITSUFACC.
HMITSISUN: Some of the previous contents were reassigned to HMITSUUN.
HMITSUPD: This variable is now provided, containing various pensions to the disabled, which previously had been included in HMITSUDI.
HMITSUUN: This variable is now provided, containing labour market training related transfers to jobseekers, which previously had been included in HMITSISUN. Please note that the number of observations is quite low.
HMITSUDI: The previous contents were reassigned to HMITSUPD.
HMITSUFACA: This variable now includes also the birth grant, which has been previously included in HMITSISMA.
HMITSUFACC: This variable is now provided, containing non-work related child care benefits, which previously had been included in HMITSISMA.
HMITSUED: The previous contents were reassigned to HMITPED.
HMITPED: This variable is now provided, containing education scholarships, which previously were included in HMITSUED.
PENSION: This variable contains now more cases, as various transfers to the disabled were reclassified as pensions (see contents of HMITSUPD).
The additional set of transfers is now filled.

TECHNICAL VARIABLES
PPOPWGT/PWGT: This variable, previously containing the person level weight of responding individuals (which had zero values for non-responding individuals), has been changed to now include the household level weight (which is always valid for all cases).

HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS VARIABLES

LOCSZ_C: The previous information was split in two variables, one reporting ‘size of the locality of residence’ which is provided in AREA_C and one reporting ‘population size of the locality of residence’ which is kept in LOCSZ_C.
AREA_C: Now provided with the same information as in the rest of the Hungarian data series.
